Where Did Cloches Come From?
Cloches have been around for a lot longer than many people realise, and they span back as far as the 1600’s. The word ‘cloche’ comes from the French word for ‘bell’, which links to the fact that cloches are domed shaped and curved. Despite the ‘cloche’ having French origines, we actually have Italy to thank for them.
They were created in Italy, as a way to protect plants during the colder months. Cloches were used to keep plants safe from winds, frost and general winter weather. Now, ‘cloche’ refers to anything that is bell shaped, domed and protects something. For example, cloches are often used to display delicate ornaments or even rare flowers, and of course - luxury candles!
Cloches had such an impact on society, that a cloche hat was later designed in 1908 by a milliner named Caroline Roboux, named because of their resemblance to glass cloches. Much like the large glass cloches you see today, these hats were bell shaped. However, this style of hat didn’t remain quite as popular as candle cloches, and they were only really seen between 1922 and 1933.
Modern Day Candle Cloches
Today, cloches are used to protect luxury candles, and to make sure we get the most out of them. By adding a cloche, you are ensuring that the aroma of the candle is preserved, and none is ‘wasted’ in between uses. It’s also a good way to ensure that all of the scent is enjoyed, rather than just the top notes. Candle cloches also prevent dirt and dust from settling on the top, which can impact the aroma when burned. Plus, they are an excellent interior design feature.
